After a long evening of discussing politics or other controversial subjects it’s common for someone to say “Well, I guess we solved the world’s problems tonight!” This good-natured remark is tacit acknowledgment that arguments never really get anywhere. Or rather they get somewhere only when the participants agree to agree.
To be more precise, controversies can’t really be resolved using our limited three-dimensional perceptual tools. It’s not that we don’t talk long enough or skillfully enough; we’re dealing with an impossibility.
This is very good to keep in mind while the human race is still in 3D mode. Let’s go easy on ourselves – the acrimony isn’t that real.
